DNA2NSA. 220hex
DNA2NSA is part of the collective project NSA, initiated in 2014 by Gisle Frøysland and Maite Cajaraville, and can be shown as the performative aspect of the multi-format piece From DNA to NSA, which revolves around the controversial ‘commercial’ management of citizens’ DNA initiated by the Icelandic government at the beginning of the 21st century (see From DNA to NSA).
DNA2NSA is an audiovisual performance by Gisle Frøysland aka 220hex and is based on research with the only publicly released part of the DNA database collected by the company DeCODE, with the approval of the Icelandic authorities, searching for specific chromosome markers. The search is carried out entirely with free technologies, using bash programming on a Linux terminal. The sound is generated by channelling the results as text directly to the sound system.
About Gisle Frøysland aka 220hex
For more than two decades, 220hex / Gisle Frøysland (Bergen, Norway) has been one of the key figures of the electronic arts scene in his country. Trained in computer science, he has been working as a musician, VJ and visual artist since the early 1980s. He is a founding member of BEK, the Bergen Electronic Art Centre, and founder and director of the Piksel festival for electronic art and free technologies, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022.
Gisle Frøysland has received important grants and has had numerous exhibitions, many of them in Norway, but also abroad. Her work has been presented at several international festivals, such as Electrohype, Dissonanze, Transmediale, Borealis, Ultima, MakeArt, Pixelache, Mal au Pixel and Electropixel.
